Easy Tricks for Portion Control

Portion control is an essential component for weight loss, and many people start out on medical weight loss plans by measuring every serving. However, you may occasionally find yourself without the tools to measure your portion or the need to prepare a meal in a hurry. Fortunately, there are some general guidelines for envisioning the proper portion that will help you keep your weight loss efforts on track. Here is what you need to know. Keep in mind that you should check with your medical weight loss center to determine what constitutes a healthy portion for your specific needs.

Meat and Fish

For most people, three ounces of cooked meat is a good serving size. For chicken, beef, or pork, a three-ounce portion should be about the size of a bar of soap. If you decide to have a burger, make yours about the size of a hockey puck to get that same three-ounce serving. Fish is measured a little differently. You should still aim for a three-ounce serving, which for fish means a piece about the size of your checkbook.

Pasta and Bread

When you’re eating pasta, one-half cup cooked is a good target for your portion. If you don’t have a measuring cup around, plate up a portion that is equivalent to the size of your fist. For bread, pancakes, and waffles, one piece of each is generally a serving, but since pieces can range so drastically in size, it is helpful to still measure them. A serving of bread should be equivalent in size to a CD case. For pancakes and waffles, one serving is about the size of a CD.

Fats

For oil, a teaspoon is a healthy serving. That amount is about the size of the tip for your thumb. For cheese, four small pieces is one serving. These pieces should each be the size of one dice. Peanut butter can be healthy, as long as you restrict the serving to the size of a Ping-Pong ball, which is about two tablespoons.
